Argentine Government Explains Reasons for INDEC Chief Dismissal

The national government explained the reasons for the dismissal of Marco Lavagna from the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INDEC). In a television interview, Manuel Adorni stated that the termination was on 'good terms,' but made it clear that there was an insurmountable difference of opinion regarding the need to update the price measurement methodology. According to Agencia Noticias Argentinas, the central controversy centered on Lavagna's intention to implement a new measurement starting in January 2026. Although Adorni acknowledged the need to update the consumption basket, he pointed out that President Javier Milei considered it 'unreasonable' at this stage of the economic program. Adorni also emphasized that even in recent months where inflation showed slight increases, the government did not attempt to intervene in the agency. 'We limited ourselves to the information provided by INDEC and never proposed changing anything because we believe it is fair that people can compare whether inflation is going down, up, or remaining constant,' Adorni stated. He explained that the government seeks to make the current index comparable with the last two years of management to demonstrate the effectiveness of its fight against inflation. 'We want to show people a comparison where they can see if inflation is going down, up, or remaining constant,' he indicated. The Chief of Staff stressed that it is a direct decision by the President to maintain the current measurement system to avoid political suspicions.
